How to Soak Gel Balls: Water, Timing and the Mistakes That Jam Your Blaster

Nine out of ten "my gel blaster is broken" messages we get are actually a gel ball problem. Undersized balls double-feed. Oversized balls wedge in the hop-up. Old balls turn to mush. Get the soak right and most feeding problems disappear.

The short version

  1. Use clean, room-temperature water. Tap water is fine in most areas.
  2. Soak for about 2 hours, until the balls reach 7-8 mm.
  3. Drain fully and let them sit 10 minutes so the surface is not slick.
  4. Store hydrated balls submerged in a sealed container in the fridge.
  5. Empty the magazine after every session.

How much water and how many balls

Gel balls expand roughly 100 times in volume. One level tablespoon of dry beads becomes a startling amount of ammo. As a rule, use a container at least ten times the volume of the dry beads and fill it most of the way with water. Crowding is the most common beginner error: beads that cannot move freely swell unevenly and come out lopsided.

Why 7-8 mm matters

Most electric gel blasters, including everything in the GellyGo lineup, are built around a 7-8 mm ball.

  • Under 7 mm (under-soaked): the ball rattles in the barrel, accuracy collapses, and two balls can feed at once.
  • Over 8 mm (over-soaked): the ball is soft and oversized, smears in the hop-up and jams the feed lip.

If you want to be precise, a cheap plastic caliper costs a few dollars. Otherwise: a correctly soaked ball should feel firm like a small grape, not squishy, and should bounce slightly when dropped on a table.

Water temperature and quality

Room temperature is ideal. Warm water speeds up soaking but produces softer, weaker balls that break in the gearbox. Ice water slows it down without any benefit.

If your tap water is very hard or heavily chlorinated and your balls come out cloudy, brittle or undersized, switch to filtered or distilled water. It is the single fix for most "my balls never get big enough" complaints.

How long is too long

Two hours is the sweet spot for most brands. Four hours is usually still fine. Overnight is where things go wrong - balls keep absorbing, get mushy and start to break down. If you soaked overnight by accident, drain them and check a few by squeezing. If they deform and stay deformed, throw the batch out. Mush in a gearbox is worse than no ammo at all.

Storing hydrated balls

Keep them fully submerged in a sealed container. Exposed to air, they shrink and harden within hours, and a half-dried ball is the worst possible thing to feed into a magazine.

In the fridge, hydrated balls keep for about a week. At room temperature, expect two or three days before they start going cloudy or smelling off. When in doubt, soak a fresh batch - a 10,000-piece packet costs about as much as a coffee.

After you play

  1. Empty the magazine completely. Balls left in a mag overnight dry out and glue themselves to the feed lips.
  2. Fire a few empty cycles to clear the barrel.
  3. Wipe the blaster dry, especially around the gearbox and battery contacts.
  4. Remove the battery if you are storing it for more than a few days.
